Ear piercings are the most common form of piercing—they’re very popular and relatively safe, you still need to treat your piercing with care and attention to avoid any complications. So we're here to let you know why it's important to clean your piercings regularly.
Why Proper Cleaning Matters
A new ear piercing is essentially a small, open wound. Without proper care, bacteria can enter the piercing channel and cause redness, swelling, or discharge. The cleaning routine doesn’t need to be complicated—just consistent.
A correct cleaning routine helps you avoid these hiccups and lets you enjoy your favorite earrings sooner.
Step 1: Wash Your Hands First (Always)
Before you touch a fresh piercing—especially a new pair of pierced earrings—your hands MUST be clean. Use warm water and a gentle, fragrance-free soap. Avoid touching the piercing throughout the day unless you’re cleaning it.

Clean hands = clean piercing.
Step 2: Use Sterile Saline Twice Daily
The gold standard for cleaning a newly pierced ear hole is a sterile saline solution. Not DIY salt water, and definitely not alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. These harsh ingredients can over-dry the skin and slow healing.
How to clean with saline:
Spray or drip saline onto a piece of sterile gauze.
Gently press it against the piercing and the pierced earrings.
Wipe around the front and back of the lobe.
Let it air dry—no towels, no cotton balls.
This step should be done morning and night, for several weeks.
Step 3: Don’t Rotate the Jewelry
Decades ago, people were told to twist or turn their stud earrings during healing. Today, piercers agree: don’t rotate the jewelry. Rotation breaks healing tissue internally and increases irritation.

Simply keep your earrings clean and stationary.
Step 4: Check the Area—but Don’t Overclean
Look for redness, crusting, or tightness. Light crusting is normal. Remove it gently with saline.
But avoid cleaning more than twice per day. Overcleaning can dry out the piercing channel and cause slow healing or flaking skin around the studs.
Step 5: Keep Hair, Makeup, and Products Away
Lotions, hair spray, and sunscreen can clog a new ear pierced hole. Try these tips:
Tie your hair back for the first week.
Avoid applying makeup too close to the piercing.
Change pillowcases every few days.
This is especially important for people planning to wear multiple styles such as double pierced earrings or multi pierced earrings—each piercing needs its own clean space to heal.
